Drawing on my deck! (update: 26/09/2017)

Boom! Still unfinished, but glad I could take a big step forward at once with this big piece that the helmet represents. Still have to put a second coat on it, and probably touch up the edges here and there, but it's still a big achievement.

Drawing on my deck! (update: 24/09/2017)

Just granted me some time to work on it. Been a while! I was a bit rusty with the strokes, but I'm happy I could manage to work on the whole shirt checkers at once, for a more homogeneous result. Still gotta add some shadows and add a second layer do the black squares, but the hardest part of it is done. After that, still a big challenge to come: the helmet!

Drawing on my deck! (update: 14/09/2017)

Back to the great slowness... but still moving! The king part is more or less done. I might add some cross-hatching details on the white shoulder pads. Or not. I'll see. A big advantage of working over a substantial coat of gesso is that I can scratch errors with a sharp knife blade.

There won't be any update about this for a while, as I won't be able to work on it. Dammit. It's far from being finished anyway...

Drawing on my deck! (update: 02/09/2017)

First two steps done!
- Basecoat with gesso to have a white, smooth surface compatible with pencil/eraser and black liners.
- Reproduction of the drawings with a pencil. To ease the erasing later, I've used a hard 2H pencil.

About 20 hours in the making... Next step: inking of the contours!

Drawing on my deck! (update: 28/08/2017)

I'm supposed to be on holidays, yet it's been days since I've done something for the board. After some further tests, I managed to find a good combination of the 3 main elements (the 2 characters and the text band that separates them. I've also made more tests on paper for variations on the design of the king. Now I know what I want it to look like.

Time to start primering the board with gesso. It's quite of a long process... and involves physical involvement!

Drawing on my deck! (update: 18/08/2017)

Moving on: time for a realistic draft! The idea is to try the technique and materials I envision to use on the skate deck. This first test is on a wood board primered with Gesso, and the drawing is done with black liner pens. With this live test, I've discovered a couple of flaws in the process. I will try to improve it all when going for the real thing. Next step is the other half of the main drawing!

Drawing on my deck! (update: 16/08/2017)

Back to business at last! Moving on with the helmet and the bandana. Now this part of the design is ready for a live test!

Drawing on my deck! (update: 17/07/2017)

First full test, with liners and brush pens. The pattern of the bandana still needs to be worked upon. I'm not sure if I like the result or not. Or if that's what I want to do with the deck. Initially, I wanted to paint it - using a brush that is. Today, I might go for "mixed media" techniques. Now I have to see if i can get a coherent result on the other half of the drawing.

Drawing on my deck! (update: 13/07/2017)

Moving on with the skate deck project. At this stage, I'm focusing on defining the contours, and to try and adapt the fantastic drawing of the king of diamonds by Bob Case. Here you can see the draft of the darth vato half of the drawing. I'm not yet sure about the kind of technique and design I will go for. The first idea is this gangsta shirt. Now I've got to see if I find a coherent idea for the other half...

Inking for alcohol markers: bleeding or not bleeding...

As shown in previous posts, I'm currently playing with alcohol markers. One of the questions I'm asking myself is about the order of the steps to produce a fully colored drawing: can I ink before coloring with alcohol markers, or do I have to ink once coloring is finished?

Don't tell me you're still on that Darth Vatos thing. Again.

Going through the first steps for what i hope will turn out to be one of my next two projects for the coming months. The initial idea of using a skateboard deck as a support dates back to last... July already. I'm finally coming closer to it!

After a significant time spent at looking for references and inspiration images that would fit with what I had in mind, I think I came across the right things. I'll tell more about it when it gets more concrete.

5000 views!

10000 views!? Well, yes and no. A significant portion comes from "spambots", a few from my checking what the posts look like, and some more from automatic verifications made by Google. Wha-ever! Let's say at least half of them are legitimate, so...

5000 views fo' sho', mofos!

MM... vegetable villains!

... some more... playing with Stylefile markers and Promarkers. More about these soon!

bad taste pt. 10

Various quick attempts at sketching and coloring over the last couple of months. A few of them might evolve to concepts for future sculpts.

The painter is dead, but his brushes keep painting.

Long time, no post. I've been busy with a big project... moving! Everything still needs to find a place, then I can start working on "decent" projects again!

In the meanwhile, I'll gradually post some of the little experiments I've done in the last months.

Mojo rebooting!

Playing with markers

Long time, no post. I haven't touched paint nor putty since last Painting Crusade. Among others, I'm in the process of moving to another place. Right now, a third of my workshop stuff is in boxes. And the other third is waiting to be packed. That will be a good occasion to get rid of some never-to-be-done projects.

At least, I keep on exploring the drawing side of life, when I get some time. Currently I'm experimenting with alcohol markers. Here's the outcome, with Stylefile brush markers, on layout paper.

The Ice Cream Man project (update 22/02/2017) ... It's on and crack'n!!!

YES!

Seems like this project is coming to an end! It still needs a base, and its ice cream man Vato, and it will be ready to hit the streets of your neighborhood! First stop: next Painting Crusade!

Some thoughts about the armature and the adhesion of putty

Ensuring the adhesion of crude putty on an armature is one of the recurrent potential pitfalls, early in the process of sculpting a miniature.

Shitty sketch while away from home for a while. Throwing arrogant Rs.

Rumors of my death were greatly exagerated!

Back to the Ice Cream Truck! Trying to get it ready for the next Painting Crusade, after putting it aside for a year (!!!).
